What are we gonna do when someone closes the cylinder while diving?

Recently, a Chinese tourist was diving in the Philippines when his cylinder was closed by another diver, T Zai, who later apologized for being "just kidding". This issue has aroused heated discussion in the diving circle at home and abroad, and has attracted the attention of all parties on the Internet. It is understood that the parties have initiated legal proceedings, and the final conclusion of the incident remains to be determined by law. However, as more and more people begin to engage in diving, how to deal with similar accidents when diving?

On the 21st, Hangzhou Music and Sports Diving Center opened a free course for some underwater enthusiasts, focusing on strategies and techniques for dealing with underwater closed cylinders.

According to Li Yayong, a diving coach at the Music and Sports Diving Center, divers have five ways to deal with emergencies when they encounter air that has been shut down or exhausted. "The first and most important one is to immediately find a diving companion around you, get a spare source of gas, and ask the diving Companion to open the valve or end the diving ascent after restoring the gas supply. Therefore, when diving, we should always pay attention to keeping the distance from our partners not too far. In case of accidents, we can get help in the first place.

Second, the left hand pulls the left shoulder strap, the right hand looks behind for the valve, and opens the valve by itself. However, it is difficult for those with limited shoulder function to touch the air valve, which requires a certain degree of flexibility of the body.

Third, take off the equipment and open the valve by oneself. However, this method requires divers to master the skills of underwater penetration and have good psychological quality. "Because if you can't get off at the first time, it may cause panic among divers."

Fourth, if the water depth does not exceed 9 meters and the diver is not around, you can choose controlled emergency swimming ascent. The left hand raises to control the exhaust, the right hand raises to protect the top of the head, and swims slowly to the water surface through exhalation. The mouth blows BCD (buoyancy adjustment device) to establish positive buoyancy.

Fifth, if the water depth exceeds 9 meters and the diver is not around, you can choose to rise urgently. First drop the weight, empty the BCD gas, expand the body into the word "big", and exhale by buoyancy.
But Li Yayong says the fifth method is more dangerous. "Loss of counterweight will quickly rise, leading to decompression sickness, but at least have the opportunity to return to the surface. We will not let divers practice this method, but we need to let divers know what to do when there is no other way to deal with the most dangerous situation.

Reporters learned that scuba diving can be divided into recreational diving, technical diving, commercial diving and public safety diving according to different difficulties and fields. Many international diving organizations have set up different educational examination systems and issued corresponding certificates.

However, Yu Yunzhi, a senior diving coach in Hangzhou, told reporters in an interview that even with a diving license and relevant training, it is very dangerous to close the cylinder while diving, and the consequences are unpredictable.
"In the elementary leisure diving teaching, there will be relevant training to simulate the state of no gas cylinder, and training to wear and tear underwater equipment. But these are limited to the coach's curriculum, the coach will inform in advance, whether in depth, environment or psychological conditions and the reality of the situation is not comparable. Yuyun Zhi said.

Yu Yunzhi said that scuba diving equipment is very complex, involving buoyancy adjustment devices, gas cylinders, regulators, etc. during the training, students usually use the kneeling position to remove the equipment at the bottom of the pool, so as to open the gas cylinder valve by themselves. However, the actual environment of the sea is quite different from that of the training pool. It is difficult to reach the training state in actual diving.

Many professional divers say that it is very dangerous to close other people's cylinders underwater. Especially for novices, it is difficult to analyze the problem rationally in the first time, and it is easy to make wrong choices in panic. If the emergency rise in panic may cause decompression sickness, and if it is serious, it may also cause decompression sickness. It's life threatening.

According to reports, after the incident was exploded, the three major international diving organizations have issued statements one after another, stressing the seriousness of the incident, and strongly condemning related acts endangering the safety of diving. The "T" has also been revoked by the relevant diving organizations.

According to the relevant legal experts, deliberate closure of cylinders during diving may lead to the risk of hypoxia and asphyxia for divers, which may cause personal casualties and serious psychological panic, and the relevant responsible persons may face related criminal penalties.
